On the occasion of the signing, Saxony’s Vice-Ministerpräsident Günther welcomed the cooperation with the Dresden-based institute of the United Nations University: “Resource conservation and sustainability are the pressing tasks of the time – both here in Saxony and worldwide. That’s why it’s good and important to me to get to know different perspectives and to work together across national borders. On the one hand, the cooperation with UNU-FLORES broadens our own horizons in terms of sustainability. On the other hand, it gives us a good framework to promote intensive engagement with sustainable business practices, even in countries that don’t have the financial resources that we do.”
Prof. Edeltraud Guenther: “The goals of the State Ministry for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture and the Dresden Institute of the United Nations University (UNU-FLORES) are fundamentally linked through their focus on environmental resources. By continuing and deepening the excellent cooperation, the Ministry supports motivated and sustainability-oriented young scientists on their way to develop solutions for the global challenges of our time. At the same time, UNU-FLORES provides young researchers with the platform and training to work in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary way and to use their potential for the common good. I am grateful and proud of our joint activities.”

The United Nations University – Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES) is one of 13 institutes of the United Nations University. It was established in Dresden in 2012. A cooperation between the State Ministry of Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture and UNU-FLORES has existed since June 2019 to jointly deal with issues related to the sustainable use of environmental resources and sustainable land management.
The continuation of the cooperation is accompanied by the funding of a PhD position in East Africa. Among other things, joint communication measures for global sustainability goals or a cooperation within the framework of the international Dresden Nexus Conference in May 2022 are also planned.
