IWA Water Reuse 2019

  • DATE / TIME:
    2019/06/16 - 2019/06/19
    Berlin, Germany

The conference, with a main theme of water reclamation and reuse, addresses water stress and global water issues, providing space for intensive exchange on water reuse solutions on different scales.

UNU-FLORES staff members will contribute to the conference with the following presentations:

    • “Sustainability and Success of Operation of Decentralized, Small-Scale SUWA Systems: A Case Study in Central Mexico” by Dr Tamara Avellán
    • “Making It Happen: Water Reuse Regulatory frame in Colombia: Bottleneck and Wicked Problems to Overcome” by Dr Serena Caucci
    • “Designing Transdisciplinary Research to Solve Complex Problems – A Comparative Case Study of Wastewater Management in Latin America and the Caribbean” by Angela Hahn
    • “Water Reuse as a Sustainable Scarcity Risk Reduction Measure: Integrating Risk and Sustainability Assessment Frameworks” by Andrea Mueller

At the poster sessions, UNU-FLORES will also present:

    • “Water Reuse Under the Perspectives of the Water-Energy-Food Nexus and the Water-Soil-Waste Nexus” (A. Müller, T. Avellán, J. Schanze)
    • “Finding Sustainability Pathways in Wastewater Management Systems in an Interdisciplinary and Participatory Manner in Latin America” (L. Benavides, T. Avellán, S. Caucci, A. Hahn, S. Kirschke)

Water stress, either caused by droughts, competing water uses or hydrological conditions is an important driver for an efficient water management by all water users. This applies to many regions across the world. Water reclamation and reuse is the key strategy to cope with these problems.

The thematic framework of the 12th IWA International Conference on Water Reclamation and Reuse (IWA Water Reuse 2019) will address the full range of topics related to water reclamation and reuse. The event brings together experts from research and development, solution providers and application. An intensive exchange is provided by the programme scheme: 3.5 days’ of oral/poster presentations, workshops and exhibition will be followed by one day of technical tours. It is innovation and solution focused by addressing water stress from three different perspectives:

    • Plenary sessions will open the conference days. Outstanding experts will address key topics in water reuse, before the community splits into thematic lecture sessions.
    • All posters will be displayed permanently during the whole conference in the networking area and will be accompanied by an award for the best Young Water Reuse Professionals poster.
    • The trade exhibition will complete in the networking area as the conference communication hub. For the final conference day several technical tours in and around Berlin are actually in preparation.

It is a yearly event, rotating through cities and countries, each time with a different theme.

IWA Water Reuse 2019 is organised by DECHEMA e.V., with primary support from DWA e.V. and sponsoring from the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research.
