    Speaker

Dr Mathew Kurian, Head of Capacity Development and Governance Unit, UNU-FLORES

UNU-FLORES Expert Dr Mathew Kurian will speak during the Plenary Session “Grappling With Complex Systems: The Water-Energy-Food Nexus Experience” on 11 October 2018 at 11:00-12:30. In his presentation, he will provide a conceptual framework for understanding the Water-Energy-Food Nexus interactions in Natural Resources Management (NRM). Using the case of the Wastewater Reuse Effectiveness Index (WREI) he will discuss the process of framing policy-oriented research and synthesising knowledge on the issue of reuse. To set the stage for a panel discussion on piloting development innovation in agriculture, he will end by discussing the role of place-based observatories in overcoming the attribution challenge in global public goods research.

    Background

The objective of CGIAR Science Forum 2018 – Win More, Lose Less: Capturing Synergies between SDGs through Agricultural Research is to identify substantial interactions between the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (both positive and negative), the role of agricultural research in augmenting synergies and managing trade-offs, and the ensuing implications for the science-policy interface. Results will contribute to the discussion of developing research themes and frameworks in CGIAR.
