The management and governance of the quantity and quality of freshwater resources face two extremes due to extreme weather conditions and extreme pollution. In addition, these two extremes are intertwined, which pose a greater risk to human health and ecosystems. This situation increasingly challenges water researchers and thus, this open space workshop asks how extreme water futures might affect the design and priorities of water research. The event includes input statements from various perspectives as well as round table discussions.

Dr Sabrina Kirschke, UNU-FLORES and Dr Hannah Kosow, University of Stuttgart – Research Center for Interdisciplinary Risk and Innovation Studies (ZIRIUS) have jointly co-organised this open-space workshop “Water Futures – Research under Dynamic Extremes” on 15 June 2021.

The 11th Water Research Horizon Conference (WRHC) brings together national and international scientists, practitioners and policy-makers with diverse backgrounds. Participants engage in a multilateral and multidisciplinary exchange about the role of research in addressing the emerging challenges of floods and droughts. The main focus is on the dynamic interplay of extreme events with human processes and ecosystems in river basins as a basis to develop strategies for risk management and adaptation measures (https://water-research-horizon.de/).

The 11th WRHC is jointly organised by the Water Science Alliance and the Wassernetzwerk Baden-Württemberg. UNU-FLORES has supported this annual event for several years.
