The “Workshop on the Transition in Mining” is a side event of the Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC2020), with the conference theme “Circular Economy in a Sustainable Society” presenting a highly relevant topic for sustainable structural change in Germany. The Workshop provides a platform to promote the industry’s circular economy practices, as well as advance discussions related to its topic with regional and international actors from science, politics, and the private sector. Its goal is to provide a basis for systematic and coherent efforts to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society. The dialogue generated in the Workshop will lay the foundation for the Knowledge Academy for Transition: a hub with the long-term perspective of sharing expertise and enabling capacity development for a sustainable transition. On behalf of UNU-FLORES, Prof. Edeltraud Guenther will deliver a presentation on “Why We Need a Knowledge Academy for Transition”. Other members of UNU-FLORES will facilitate and foster the discussions.
The transition in mining, which refers to the phasing out of coal-fired power generation, intends to bring a holistic system transition across sectors to initiate sustainable structural changes in regions that traditionally relied on the mining industry. This transition will mark a new era, both for people and industry of this region and for sustainable development in Germany. The implications of this process are of interest not only on a national level, but for the European Union and the wider international community. It presents an opportunity to foster and exchange knowledge about the environmental, social, and economic aspects that this transformation will bring about.
