    At the 3rd World Irrigation Forum (WIF3) and 70th International Executive Council (IEC) Meeting in Bali, UNU-FLORES PhD Researcher Agossou Gadedjisso-Tossou will be conducting a Young Professional’s Training Workshop. It focuses on optimising the value of water through integrated farming and market-driven agriculture, enhancing the value chain of irrigation water to promote socioeconomic community transformation.

    To improve agricultural crop-water productivity, one needs to choose the most suitable crop cycle length for the area and the optimal timing for planting, adjust the plant density and soil fertility to the soil moisture in the root zone, and introduce deficit irrigation where water is a key limiting factor in crop production. For these purposes, FAO developed AquaCrop model in 2009 to assess crop yield response to water of herbaceous crops. The AquaCrop model simulates the crop yield that can be expected in a given environment. To be widely applicable, the model uses a relatively small number of parameters – explicit and mostly intuitive – and attempts to balance simplicity, accuracy, and robustness.

    At the end of this training workshop, participants will be able to run and apply the AquaCrop software for assessing (i) agriculture practices; (ii) expected yield for various irrigation strategies; and (iii) various planting dates, different cropping patterns, and several field management techniques. As the training material will be made available to all participants, they should be able to train other individuals in the use of the software.

    The conclusions and recommendations of the event would be followed up with an action plan for the ICID National Committees to follow up in their respective countries.

    Background

    The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) was established on 24 June 1950 as a Scientific Technical and Voluntary Not-for-profit Non-Governmental International Organization (NGO) with headquarters in New Delhi, India. The Commission is dedicated to enhancing the worldwide supply of food and fibre for all people by improving water and land management and the productivity of irrigated and drained lands through appropriate management of water, the environment, and application of irrigation, drainage, and flood management techniques.

    WIF3 together with 70th IEC Meeting in cooperation with host Indonesian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (INACID) will be held from 1–7 September 2019 in Bali, Indonesia.

    WIF3 provides an important platform for scientists, researchers, experts, and professionals from private and government sectors to come together to exchange and share experiences. It also provides excellent opportunity for solutions to be disseminated and recognised by public at large. Considering the above, it is hoped that WIF3 deliberations will lead to a clear understanding of the burning issues as well as practical action on the ground. The role of various stakeholders of the production value chains will also be better understood.

    The World Irrigation Forum – which takes place every three years – stimulates and promotes multidisciplinary discussions towards sustainable solutions to water management in agriculture through:

    • Exchange of latest irrigation and drainage policies, practices, innovations, and technologies;
    • Exploring and formulating concrete interdisciplinary proposals;
    • Development of liaison/collaboration among various national/international institutions/organisations/private sector working for irrigated agriculture; and
    • Advocacy for political commitments.
