2017/10/21 Dresden, Germany
Dresden celebrates its five-year anniversary as a United Nations (UN) host city on the occasion of UN Day, Tuesday, 24 October 2017. For the festivities, the organisers have come up with a number of highlights. Among other things, they will attempt to welcome guests from all 193 UN Member States on this day. It is an ambitious project – and the call starts now!
Under the motto “One world. Collectively. Our future.” the Dresden branch of the United Nations University (UNU-FLORES) invites all interested parties to an Open House with international flair. State minister Dr Fritz Jaeckel has given his patronage for the event. During the Open House, guests can expect a diverse programme, where they can catch a glimpse of what the UN does every day directly here in Dresden. As a special highlight on this day, the organisers are hoping to welcome at least one visitor from each Member State of the United Nations at the Open House.
“For this year’s anniversary, we would like in particular to draw attention to the relevance of the UN, to the diversity, which emerges through the cooperation of so many nations, and to the importance of all working collectively to solve global problems,” explains Prof. Reza Ardakanian, Director of UNU-FLORES.
UN Member States range from A, such as Andorra to Z, such as Zimbabwe. A complete list can be found at un.org/en/member-states. “In order to achieve our goal, we need to coordinate this, of course. Visitors must register with us at the stand in the World Trade Center Dresden (WTC) on 24 October at 12:00. This should go quite quickly, we only need to know the nationality represented. It would be great to have as many people as possible in traditional national robes,” says Anne Bibas, Head of the UNICEF Working Group in Dresden. The registration of participants will take place at their table. “I am very excited to see how many guests and from how many countries we can get together. It’s going to be a great day!”
From 12:00 onwards, all guests will gather in front of the World Trade Center so that a large group photo can be made and the number of participants announced.
The organisers are asking everyone to come by: “We all call on everyone to participate in this wonderful campaign and drop by! Gladly in your national costumes. Sign up now, come by on 24 October, and let us live our motto – one world. Collectively. Our future.”
The organisers of UN Day in Dresden include UNU-FLORES, together with the City of Dresden, National Association of the German Society for the United Nations (DGVN) in Saxony, Technische Universität Dresden, UNICEF Working Group Dresden, Local Agenda 21 for Dresden e.V., Lions Club Local Agenda 21 Dresden e.V., and World Trade Center.
