A respected water professional both in the Netherlands and internationally, Prof. van Vierssen has served as an AC Member and will now replace the outgoing Chair, Prof. Rattan Lal, who has been a valued supporter of UNU-FLORES after serving two terms on the Committee.
Prof. Alcamo is a professor of Environmental System Science as well as Director of Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP), both at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. Prior to that, Prof. Alcamo served as Chief Scientist of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), where he worked to strengthen the interface between global science and policy. He also played a strategic role as Special Science Advisor to the Head of the UN Climate Secretariat during the final phase of negotiating the Paris Climate Agreement.
Both Prof. van Vierssen and Prof. Alcamo take up their AC leadership and membership, respectively, as of 1 January 2020, joining Prof. Bancy Mati and Prof. Karl Heinz-Feger on the AC. Prof. Adelaide Nardocci’s term with the Committee also comes to an end.
UNU-FLORES sincerely thanks Prof. Lal for his astute leadership and Prof. Nardocci for her invaluable support and greatly looks forward to working alongside Prof. van Vierssen, Prof. Alcamo, and our other esteemed AC members in bringing the Nexus Approach to the forefront of research and policy.
