To raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity, TU Dresden and UNU-FLORES jointly organise a social media campaign, giving the Saxon Dialogue on Biodiversity a visual voice.

Biodiversity sustains our life on Earth – providing, for example, the fresh air we breathe, the food we eat, and the freshwater we drink (IPBES 2019).  However, biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate. The Global Sustainable Development Report 2019 indicates that 25 per cent of biodiversity is threatened with extinction. In Saxony, approximately 50 per cent of vascular plants and 60 per cent of the ecosystems within the Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive are in an unfavourable or deteriorating state (SMEKUL 2020). The level of awareness on biodiversity in German society, measured by knowledge, attitudes, and behavioural willingness to protect biodiversity, was found to be at an alarming rate of only 28 per cent (Naturbewusstsein 2019, BMU).

In the spirit of the UN Biodiversity Day 2021 motto, “We’re part of the solution”, the Saxon Dialogue on Biodiversity and its accompanying social media campaign shall raise awareness on biodiversity.

The project received the “eku idee” prize 2020 as part of the “eku Future Prize for Energy, Climate, Environment in Saxony” awarded by the Saxon State Ministry for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture (SMEKUL).

Be part of the solution – showcase your appreciation of nature with three simple steps:

    1. Take a picture of the nature around you.
    2. Post it on Instagram with the hashtag #BiodiversityofSaxony.
    3. Raise awareness about biodiversity and spread the message!

The collection of images and the hashtag will live beyond the project to continue the Saxon Dialogue on Biodiversity. A selection will be showcased during the event series, the first instalment of which begins 24 June 2021.

We are thrilled to see the beauty of nature in Saxony!
