UNU-FLORES takes part in a large project – KlimaKonform – funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the frame of the funding initiative “Regional Information on Climate Action” (RegIKlim). Kicking off on 10 June 2020, the project is led by UNU-FLORES’s strategic partner– Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden) – and involves 11 German institutions. The project is funded for three years from May 2020 to April 2023 with a funding amount of 2.5 million euros.

Like many nations and regions in the world, Germany faces great challenges posed by the increasing intensity and frequency of extreme events such as floods, droughts, and storms. The project KlimaKonform aims to develop an integrative and action-oriented approach to determine and assess the capacities of climate change adaptation for a typical region of Germany in cooperation with districts and selected municipalities. KlimaKonform will provide a knowledge platform to support local authorities in their decision making on adaptation to climate change.

UNU-FLORES contributes to the large initiative through a sub-project, in cooperation with the Chair of Sustainable Management and Environmental Accounting and the Chair of Land Management at TU Dresden. The approach, methodological knowledge, and decision-support tools can be adapted to other conditions for reducing climate change impacts and enhancing the regional climate resilience of ecological and economic development. The findings, products, and experiences from the project are transferrable to other similar regions.
