Karla Locher (UNU-FLORES) presents at Nexus Seminar No. 31

The ecosystem services concept has proven to be a valuable framework to help us understand the complex interconnections between the ecosystem and society. This integrated framework allows for a better comprehension of the socioecological systems by disentangling the effects and interaction among ecosystem services and their beneficiaries (trade-offs and synergies) using an interdisciplinary approach – an essential requirement for nexus thinking. Furthermore, the implementation of this approach could significantly improve sustainable landscape planning, through informing policymakers and thereby, helping to close the gap between science and policy.

This Nexus Seminar will provide an overview of the ecosystem services approach, concepts, and methods, to shed light on the current state of ecosystems and societal demands, especially in the context of transformed landscapes. The seminar will also provide insight into a case study in Southern Chile.

Nexus Seminar Series

UNU-FLORES in collaboration with the Faculty of Environmental Sciences of TU Dresden is excited to announce the Nexus Seminar Series. The joint seminar series, which launched in 2015, features lectures by senior scholars that highlight all dimensions of research on the Nexus Approach, ranging from hands-on implementation strategies to theoretical debates. The Nexus Seminars serve not only as a platform for scientific exchange and cooperation between UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden but also a medium for the partner institutions to discuss their research with a broader audience.

Taking place once a month, each seminar is open to the public and held alternatingly at UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden.
