Over a period of more than 10 years, the project Integrated Water Resources Management: Model Region Mongolia (IWRM MoMo) investigated the scientific prerequisites for a holistic approach of managing water resources in the Kharaa River Basin (KRB) in Northern Mongolia, a region characterised by a rapid socioeconomic transition and data scarcity.
The project focused on the development and implementation of an IWRM, which by the definition of Global Water Partnership also considers water in the context of “land and related resources”, “economic and social welfare” and “vital ecosystems”. The resource nexus which was made popular more recently resembles the IWRM concept in many ways, but with a wider focus and the concurrent consideration of several nexus elements and their linkages.
Inevitably, IWRM addresses several nexus elements. Through the specific example of IWRM implementation in the KRB, this lecture covers the potential synergies and tradeoffs between water management and the alternative prioritisation of land management, mineral resources exploitation, and food production in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, it will discuss how focusing on SDG 12 can help reduce tradeoffs between different nexus elements and the SDGs.
UNU-FLORES, in collaboration with PRISMA – Centre for Sustainability Assessment and Policy on behalf of TU Dresden, is delighted to present the Nexus Seminar Series. The joint seminar series, which launched in 2015, features lectures by senior scholars that highlight all dimensions of research on the Nexus Approach, ranging from hands-on implementation strategies to theoretical debates. The Nexus Seminars serve not only as a platform for scientific exchange and cooperation between UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden but also a medium for the partner institutions to discuss their research with a broader audience.
Taking place once a month, each seminar is open to the public and under the current circumstances will be delivered via a virtual Zoom videoconference.
