Bangladesh is the world’s second largest textile and garments exporter, just behind China, and forms an essential building block within the global textile supply chain. Over the past 25 years, the textile industry has become by far the most important export sector in Bangladesh and is the driver of the country’s sustained pace of economic growth. The industry sector employs over 4 million workers. Thus, sustainability, in terms of the impact on the environment, society, and economy in this sector is crucial for Bangladesh.
As part of Engelbert Strauss‘s sustainability activities in Bangladesh, the clothing manufacturer and retailer aims to promote the quality of higher education in the country. The goal is to permanently improve skill sets with regard to social responsibility, environmental protection, and technical innovation in the country. Through an international cooperation with Engelbert Strauss, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), and the United Nations University (UNU-FLORES), curricula, teaching methods and material, and the quality of research get revised and improved. The project will provide training to a future Professor & Assistant Professor, develop curricula with a focus on sustainability and innovation in the textile sector, and implement new study modules and teaching techniques at the Bangladeshi university partner. Through the improved qualification of future specialists and managers in the areas of social responsibility, environmental protection, and innovation in the textile and clothing industry, Engelbert Strauss contributes to the improvement of the working conditions of workers in Bangladesh’s production plants and to the sustainable future development of the textile sector as such.
This project is funded by Engelbert Strauss.
