The increasing scarcity of water, combined with other factors such as energy and fertilizers, is driving millions of farmers and other entrepreneurs to make use of wastewater. In order to address the technical, institutional, and policy challenges of safe water reuse, developing countries and countries in transition need clear institutional arrangements and more skilled human resources, with a sound understanding of the opportunities and potential risks of wastewater use. During this project we identified good practice examples from Latin America, Africa and Asia, inviteed those who were involved to a workshop that we organized in Lima, Peru to share their views, and then engage in a discussion to identify the knowledge gaps to set the future research agenda. To make the discussions more productive and relevant, we also invited few more experts, governemnt officials, and acdemicians from Latin America. The good practice examples presented at the workshop were later disseminated by UNU-FLORES as an edited volume and the knowledge gaps identified will be addressed through doctoral level research. This project was one of the contributions by UNU-FLORES towards the Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture – Phase 2 (SUWA2) initiative led by UNU-FLORES on behalf of six UN-Water members, partners and programmes (FAO, WHO, UNEP, UNU-INWEH, UNU-FLORES, and IWMI).
Funding for this project has been secured from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the administrative arrnagements made by UNU-ViE.
